Improv Vitamins is a drop-in, come-when-you-can improv workout for both students and long-time performers. Each session is a structured class that focuses on mechanics, characterization, and advanced scene work. At only $12 to $15 a session, it is one of the best deals in town!

Mechanics

Part One of each Improv Vitamins workout is dedicated to warming up and working on the mechanics of improv. Yes, warming up means your entire instrument: body, voice, and spirit. And yes, mechanics means drilling the basics, but through advanced applications. (Even the most experienced improvisers sometimes get rusty or sloppy if they don't work out and reinforce understood and established rules of improv with some regularity.) Build trust, confidence, and respect in your scene partners by breaking bad habits, such as shutting down their ideas and asking questions that don't add information.

Characterization

Delivering information through the perspective of a character is one of the foundations of comedy improv. Part Two of each Improv Vitamins workout addresses various ways to develop unique and compelling characters who are based in reality — or at least based in the 'canons of truth' that have been established and accepted by the audience. How you can use body, voice, and point of view to create and maintain a character is the focus of these exercises. Explore ways to stretch as an actor; develop physicalities that take you out of your static self.

Advanced Scene Work

The final third of each Improv Vitamins class focuses on scene work that incorporates the exercises from earlier in the day, so you can apply the skills you've honed within the context of actual scenes. We also work on developing fun and interesting ways to spice up scene work. Listening for — without contriving — patterns, labeling your scene partners in ways the audience doesn't expect, and employing stage conventions such as split screens fall into this category. Construct scenes with a beginning, middle, and end and do it with style!

Rules of the Class

Improv Vitamins is a safe place to grow as an actor and improviser. Accordingly, the following rules are in effect at all times:

1. Be respectful of other actors' personal space. No kissing, hitting, or inappropriate touching without consent.

2. Be respectful of the class. Arrive on time, give fellow classmates your full attention during their scenes, and keep cell phones muted.

3. Have fun. Lots of fun!

Cost

The cost of each weekly 3 hour class is just $12 if you pay for 4 classes at a time. You don't even have to commit to coming 4 weeks in a row -- just come when you can! You'll have credit until you use up all your classes. If you are unable or don't want to commit to 4 classes, the cost of a single class is only $15. Either way, that's a DEAL for improv classes in Los Angeles!

Plus, every time you bring at least one new person to class, you get to take that class for free! (Or you can work out whatever arrangement you want with the person, i.e., split the 2-for-1 between you two, etc.)

I accept cash, check and even credit cards via PayPal.
